Hi Dr. Kalam,
ReplyDeleteHere is my answer for the discussion.
1. According to the police officer view, the school violence plan should have at least four items. List and define the four items.
Identification and mitigation of the problem: It is the ongoing action that prevents or reduces the effets of a hazardous situation. These can be both short and long-term activities such as school safety programs, emergency lighting and warnings, and handicap accessibility.
Preparedness: Preparedness activities are those actions that help schools respond effectively and responsibly to any situation. Some of these actions include, but are not limited to, planning and training, which should involve all entities that will respond to the incident. Training, which will vary based on the age of the student, should be expanded to include the community.
Response: This activity includes actions taken during the incident. In addressing the response, it must always be remembered that the protection of life is the first priority. To ensure proper response, drills and exercises to practice and test the plan are essential.
Recovery: Recovering from an incident may take several days, weeks, or even years. Although the physical part of recovery is easier to accomplish, the psychological wounds and scars may last years and they could be short-term or long-term.
2. What important function does the Memorandum of Understanding provides?
It ensures a clear understanding as to how the police and schools will work together in managing serious juvenile misbehavior, crisis incidents, information sharing, and special events.
3. What are some of the traits and backgrounds that police officers may observe?
No remorse for their actions, violence seen as being acceptable, elevated anger, substance abuse, cruelty to others or animals, fire setting, brooding, making threats, self-inflicted wounds, collecting weapons, high levels of irresponsibility, chronic theft or stealing, aggressive sexual behaviors and others.
4. Three responsibilities of a school resource officer.
Work in concert with the school principal, provide a program of educational leadership by acting as a guest speaker in addressing tobacco, alcohol, violence prevention, and act as a communication liaison with police agencies and provide basic information concerning students on the campus served by the officer.
5. Two practices recommended for the student behavior, supervision and management.
Articulate a clearly defined locker policy and develop and enforce a school dress code.
6. Two recommended practices for safe schools related to school climate.
Make the campus safe and welcoming, beginning early in the morning and provide close supervision, remedial training, and restitution for the serious habitual offender.
7. Three essential ingredients of a safe school plan.
Placing school safety on the educational agenda, building and developing the team and conducting a continuing evaluation.
8. Bullying and its impact. Who is affected the most?
Bullying is typically viewed as a common and enduring schoolyard occurrence as much as is theft. It is defined as repeated acts of intimidation towards a weaker person to make them do something. It has been speculated that is has played a role in some of the school shootings in our nation. The act has different faces depending on the grade level, but the most affected and those “bullied”, also known as outcasts.
Hello everyone. I couldn’t make it to class because I slept in. I was really tired. I enjoyed the class and I hope to see you all again at graduation!

1. The four items are identifying the problem, preparedness, response, and recovery. Identifying the problem to me is assessing the factors that come into play that leads to the problem it is important to identify because you cannot fix it, unless you know what it is. Preparedness is to me, a form of disaster prevention. Let’s face it; if someone does come into a school and opens fire, you want to have the best possible “what if” plan in place. Following that, you want to have a response plan so that you know how to answer the what if plan. And the recovery has to do with the aftermath. How do you put everything back into place? How do you approach the aftermath as far as trauma goes? All four of these are highly important factors that must be addressed.
2. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is important in any organization. It’s important function is that we or all parties involved are at an agreement, an understanding of the procedures.
3. Some of the traits and backgrounds of these children that officers may observe could be bad behavior, disobedience, and the way that they socialize (intra-verts, gang affiliation, known bully, etc.)
4. The school resource officer serves as a community leader and liaison between the school and community. They are responsible for knowing what trends are occurring in the school so that he/she can intervene to prevent criminal activity. Also, they are responsible for being a possible role model to the students.
5. I would recommend that students have strict rules with 0 tolerance, and parental involvement.
6. I would recommend that the school maintain cleanliness (broken window theory), and that the students develop respect for their community.
7. Three essential ingredients of a safe school plan are assessment, intervention, and an affective aftermath plan.
8. Bullying is when someone torments, bothers or basically commits acts (verbal or physical or both) with the goal of overpowering another. Most bullying occurs in the primary thru secondary school years. Bully usually picks on others who cannot defend themselves and they install fear. The impact on children is that they feel afraid in the school environment, they cannot focus on their academic tasks, they may even become anti-social and this creates greater mental health issues. The victim is affected the most because they feel they have no one to turn to sometimes.
1.) According to the police officer view, the school violence plan should have at least four items? List and define the four items.
ReplyDelete1. Identification and mitigation of the problem – is the ongoing action that prevents or reduces the effects of a hazardous situation. These can be both short or/and long-term activities such as school safety programs, emergency lighting and warnings, and handicap accessibility.

2.) What important function does the Memorandum of Understanding provide?
1. Clearly defining what each organization will do from the beginning to the end of the function.
2. What resources each participant will provide and what the command structure is.
3. Recognizing an ongoing liaison among all participants to enhance communications and readiness.
4. Assigning specific tasks and encouraging agencies to appoint the best employees of the agencies to those tasks.
3.) Police officers have an important role in school safety. Regarding children at risk, what are some of the traits and backgrounds of these children that officers may observe?
Some of the traits and backgrounds are:
1. No remorse for their actions.
2. Violence seen as being acceptable.
3. Elevated anger.
4. Substance abuse.
5. Cruelty to animals.
6. Fire setting.
7. Brooding.
8. Making threats.
9. Chronic lack of respect.
10. Out of control behavior.
11. Aggressive sexual behavior.
4.) Identify at least three responsibilities of the school resource officer.
1. Work in concert with the school principal, meeting with the principal on a weekly basis.
2. Present programs to parents on issues related to alcohol and other drugs, violence prevention, and safety.
3. Act as a communication liaison with police agencies and provide basic information concerning students on the campus served by the officer.
Week 3 Assignment
ReplyDelete#1 A school violence plan has to include the following items: Identification of the problem, preparedness, response and recovery. Identification is simply that, being able to identify the problem or potential problems in or around the school environment. Preparedness is having a plan(s) in place that dictate what steps/measures should be taken in the event. Response is the actual intervention by teachers, staff, school LE, local LE and/or state/federal LE. And lastly recovery is the steps taken to “get back to normal”, if psychologists are needed for those traumatized, re-opening of school & classrooms, assurance to the public that the ordeal is over and safe to resume normal activity.
#2 A MOU eliminates any misinformation or misunderstandings that could occur when setting policy or rules in schools. It is a binding document between 2 or more parties when a legal document isn’t needed.
#3 School Officers must be on the look-out for classic psychological signs such as anti-social disorder, suicidal tendencies, signs of abuse, malnutrition, neglect, etc.
#4 The responsibilities of the school resource officer include being a role-model for the students, POC/Liaison between students-staff-parents-media etc, and first responder to any emergency.
#5 Two practices that merit mention are Mandatory Uniform Policy and Zero-tolerance policy (drugs/weapons/abuse).
#6 Of the many practices schools can implement I believe good inter-community relations (school involvement in community volunteer programs) and proactive relations with law enforcement.
#7 Three vital aspects to ensure a safe school plan are assessment (foresight), intervention (action) and after-action plans.
#8 According to the Dept of Health & Human Services bullying is the following: Punching, shoving, and other acts that hurt people physically, spreading bad rumors about people, keeping certain people out of a "group”, teasing people in a mean way, getting certain people to "gang up" on others.
5.) Provide at least two of the practices recommended for student behavior, supervision and management.
ReplyDelete1. Review the student handbook – ensure that behavior expectations are clearly communicated, consistently enforced, and fairly applied. School policies should reflect behavior expectations outlined in federal, state, county, and local statutes or ordinates.
2. Train students to take responsibilities for their own safety – encourage students to report suspicious individuals present on school grounds. Provide students and staff with a toll free hotline for reporting weapons offenses and other criminal activity.
6.) Identify at least two of the recommended practices for safe schools related to school climate.
1. Make the campus safe and welcoming, beginning early in the morning. School safety leadership begins at the top, from the principal to lower staff members.
2. Create a climate of ownership and school pride. Every student and staff member needs to feel like a key part of the school community.
7.) Provide at least three essential ingredients of a safe school plan
These are three ingredients for a safe school plan: First, placing school safety on the education agenda, this involves making a personal and collective commitment toward creating a safe and welcoming school climate; Second, Building a developing a team, making school safe is a joint responsibility, requiring a broad based team and working attitudes that complement a collaborative and cooperative spirit; Third, Reviewing the law, the law defines what is required and what is allowed in safe school planning.
8.) What is bullying? What is its impact on children in the school environment? Who is affected the most?
Bullying is typically viewed as a common and enduring schoolyard occurrence as much as is theft. Bullying can be teasing someone about their height, weight, race, and other such things. In middle school the taunting seems to get meaner and the rougher form of bullying usually sets in. At this age children are chased home from school by groups of bullies, or during physical education or in the bathrooms. School becomes a frightening place to be for a child who is victim of bullying. Middle school student are mostly the victims of bullying.
Good Afternoon Dr. Kalam.
ReplyDelete1.In the view of a police officer, school violence should have four items which include: 1.Identification and mitigation of the problem which is the ongoing action that prevents or reduced the effects of a hazardous situation which can be either short or long term activities like school safety programs, lighting and warnings and handicap accessibility. 2. Preparedness which are activities with actions that help schools respond effectively and responsibly to any situation, such as, planning and training. 3. Response, here the activities include taking action during the incident. we always have to keep in mind the that the protection of life is the first priority. To make sure these responses are done correctly, drills and exercises need to occur to practice and test the plan. And Lastly, 4. Recovery from an incident. Recovery takes time, physical recovery is easier to accomplish other than psychological wounds and scars may last years.
2.Important functions of a MOU is to define what each organization will do from the beginning to the end of the function, it should include what resources each participant will provide and what the command structure should be. It should also recognize an ongoing liaison among all participants to enhance communications and readiness. As well as assign specific tasks and encouraging agencies to appoint the best employees of the agency to those tasks.
3.Because there needs to be a closer examination of children at risk, the traits an officer needs to look at the children who have no remorse for their actions, violence to children is seen as being acceptable, children with elevated anger, children who are cruel to others or animals, children who make threats as well as children who appear as they do wounds to themselves. The primary role of the police is not of a social worker but to look at the traits of a child that they see and have contact with on a day to day basis to hopefully have interventions.
4. One of the responsibilities of the school resource officer is primarily to been one of responding to a situation and taking action depending on the circumstances. They are responsible for knowing the happenings in the schools and the layout of the schools. Lastly they need to be able to provide concerning students.
5.As stated in the book, Rules need to be established in the home and carried over to schools. Parents and teachers need to work together to create a safe and secure environment for the children. Schools should practice a dress code rule that students need to abide by it. If not followed, then consequences will occur. And a very simple Rule that will get anyone far is the knowledge and practice of Respect. For example when using foul language it exerts attitude and disrespect.
6.School safety needs to start at the beginning of the day with a safe and welcoming beginning early in the morning. Begin the day greeting students as well as visit random classrooms so they know who you are and show them you care. Schools should also provide close supervision and create a special supervision for the repeat offender.
7.When school safe plans are constructed they should be customized to meet the community’s needs. A school safe plan should include crisis management and emergency evacuation, parent participation and school security.
8.Bullying has been around for years. One of the differences that there is in bullying tactics depends on the grade levels in elementary schools, cruel words and sayings is the most common type which is usually referred to kids weight, race or appearance. In middle school the taunting gets rougher where kids are chased home or are confronted by the “bully in the bathroom or during their lunch breaks. I think children are the most affected because they are the ones who make the decision that they have suffered enough and chose violence as the only way to stop. Their victims are usually students and faculty because their location of choice is the school they attend.

2. What important function does the Memorandum of Understanding provide? The Memorandum of Understanding defines what each organization will do from the beginning to the end of the function. Next, what are the resources of each participant will provide and what the command structure is. Also, recognizing an ongoing liaison among all participants to enhance communications and readiness. Finally, assigning specific tasks and encouraging agencies to appoint the best employees of the agency to those tasks.
3. Police officers have an important role in school safety. Regarding children at risk, what are some of the traits and backgrounds of these children that officers may observe? Some of the traits includes but are not limited to the following; no remorse for their actions, violence seen as being acceptable, elevated anger, emotionally distant from others/impairment in sharing love or affection, substance abuse, cruelty to others or animals, fire setting, brooding, making threats, self-inflicted wounds, chronic lack of respect for other, high levels of irresponsibility, chronic theft or stealing, out-of-control behaviors, aggressive sexual behaviors and chronic deception.

ReplyDelete4. Identify at least three responsibilities of the school resource officer. The problems, hopes, and values of the community are exhibited in the schools, only on a smaller scale. Officers at schools, not necessarily as enforcers but also as helpers and problem solvers, can spot problem and help identify preventive solutions or needed interventions, build positive relationship with students or staff, and offer counseling or access to community resources. Thus, these officer, especially if they are regularly at one school, get to know the students’ personalities, personal situation, and what their normal behavior patterns are, all of which help spotting and heading of trouble.
5. Provide at least two of the practices recommended for student behavior, supervision and management. Is to articulate a clearly defined locker policy. The locker policy at each school should appropriately reflect the district’s custodial interest. And develop and enforce a school dress code. Students and staff tend to behave the way they are allowed to dress.
6. Identify at least two of the recommended practices for safe schools related to school climate. First of all, build a system of standards and accountability that takes accounts of school climate measures. Making sure it include adopting statewide, evidence-based standards for school climate, developing tools to help measure school climate, creating a accountability expectations that extend beyond academics to account for all need of children, and provides resources and technical assistance to help all school achieve the school climate standards. Secondly, support and disseminate evidence-based models of school practice. Schools need to ensure every student will have a supportive relationship with at least one adult in school; design academic and extracurricular programs with the specific goal of proving adult role-model; provide student with the tools and resources to know how to communicate with adults about rumors, threats, or abusive behavior; and ensure that all students and staff know how to identify and respond to potentially violent students.
7. Provide at least three essential ingredients of a safe school plan. The essential ingredient for creating a safe school plan is placing school safety on the educational agenda. This involves making a personal and collective commitment toward creating a safe and welcoming school climate. Secondly, building and developing the team. Making school safe is a joint responsibility, requiring a broad-based team and working attitudes that complement a collaborative and cooperative spirit. Third, conducting a site assessment. Determine the specific issues and concerns that the local community believes are most important. This step begins the process of customizing a relevant and meaningful safe school plan.
8. What is bullying? What is its impact on children in the school environment? Who is affected the most? Bullying is the act of intimidating a weaker person to make them do something. It also discourages or frightens with threats or a domineering manner, intimidate nosily domineering; tending to browbeat others. The impact on children is when they feel most afraid in school environment; is when they are being taunted about their height, weight, race, and other such things. Some students ask their parents if they can stay home from school. I think the student who is being victimized is affected the most because they feels their is no one on their side.

ReplyDeleteHello Dr. Kalam:
1. One of the four items the school plan should include starts with Identification and mitigation of the problem. It is the ongoing action that prevents or reduces the effects of a hazardous situation. Second, would be preparedness. Preparedness activities are those actions that help schools respond effectively and responsibly to any situation. It also includes training and planning. Third, is response. This activity includes actions taken during the incident and drills to test the plan are essential. Finally, the fourth item would be recovery. Recovering from an incident may take several days, weeks, or even years.
2. The important functions the Memorandum of Understandings provides is how the schools and police will work together in controlling serious delinquent misbehavior along with crisis incidents and other events.
3. Some of the traits police officers may observe begin with no signs of guilt. Substance abuse, physical and sexual abuse in the past, aggressive behavior and actions towards others, and self inflicting wounds among many other things.
4. Three responsibilities of a school resource officer should be perhaps being a positive role model for the students. The officer should work with the school principle and become familiar with the trends occurring in the school so they can help deter criminal activity. Also, the officer should present programs to parents on issues related to alcohol, drugs, violence prevention, and safety.
5. Two of the practices recommended are to review the student handbook. Make sure that policies are correctly enforced and fairly applied. Another practice should be to train students to take responsibility for their own safety. Anything suspicious should be reported immediately.
6. Two practices recommended for school safety related to school climate are as follows: Make the school warm and welcoming. Also, create a school climate of pride and ownership, making students and staff feel like a key part of the school community.
7. Three essential ingredients of a safe school plan are placing school safety on the educational agenda. Second, building and developing the team. Third, conducting a continuing evaluation.
8. Bullying is a form of abuse. It comprises repeated acts over time that involves a real or perceived imbalance of power with the more powerful individual or group abusing those who are less powerful. Bullying consists of three basic types of abuse: emotional, verbal and physical. I believe the most affected are those who are the victims; the ones being bullied.
See you next Saturday Dr. Kalam. I'm looking forward for next weekend's course =)
ReplyDelete1. According to the police officer view, the school violence plan should have at least four items? List and define the four items
ReplyDeleteThe four items that a school violence plan should have are as follows:
1) Identification and mitigation of the problem: This is when a hazardous situation is identified and ongoing action that prevents or reduces the effects of the hazardous situation. They can be a mix of long and short term activities (i.e. school safety programs, emergency lighting and warnings and handicap accessibility.
2) Preparedness: These are activities whose actions help scholls respond effectively and responsibly to any situation. This can include actions such as planning and training for any and all entities that would respond to an incident.
3) Response: Includes activities that would occur or take place during an incident. When in this phase it is important to always remember that the protection of life is the first priority. Drills and execises are essential for testing the plan and for practice.
4) Recovery: This is the phase of the plan that includes all activities that come after an incident. Recovery usually has two parts (short and long term) and both are essential. Short term recovery typically refers to restoring essential services like water, electricity, etc. Long term recovery usually refers to activities like reconstruction, counseling and reassessment of plans and procedures in place before the incident.
2. What important function does the Memorandum of Understanding provide?
The memorandum of understanding or MOU is the first essential step that must take place before any planning takes place. The MOU clearly defines each organization’s role from the beginning to end of an incident. It also specifies what resources each organization will provide or be responsible for. It establishes a liason for every entity involved which enhances communications and readiness. The last function of the MOU is to assign specific tasks to agencies as well as encouraging those agencies to assign their best employees to those tasks.
3. Police officers have an important role in school safety. Regarding children at risk, what are some of the traits and backgrounds of these children that officers may observe?
There are a myriad of traits that an officer must be trained to recognize from students in their schools, especially in at-risk children. Some of those traits include: no remorse for their actions, violence is viewed as acceptable behavior, substance abuse, cruelty to animals or others, self-inflicted wounds, chronic lack of respect for others, aggressive sexual behaviors and chronic deceptions. These are just some of those behaviors.
4. Identify at least three responsibilities of the school resource officer.
There are many responsibilities that fall on police assigned to schools especially as school resource officers. Three of those responsibilities are not just limited to being a reactive protector of students, staff and property at a school. School resource officers are expected to be proactive and help those under their supervision solve problems they face so that they don’t become a problem for everyone at the school. School resource officers must also gather intelligence about the school and those within that campus to identify potential issues of concern or that could become a concern. SRO’s also are the liason with other agencies that might have to respond to an incident at the school.
5. Provide at least two of the practices recommended for student behavior, supervision and management.
ReplyDeleteSome of the practices outlined in the book include methods or practices such as reviewing the student handbook with students. This practice is extremely important because it allows school officials to clearly communicate behavior expectations to the students as well as how they will be consistently enforce and fairly applied. It should also be noted that these behavior expections outlined in the handbook should also reflect local, state and federal laws.
6. Identify at least two of the recommended practices for safe schools related to school climate.
One principle related to school climate and its enhancement is to make sure that principals are out, beginning early in the morning, interacting with students to make the campus feel safe and welcoming. Principals and staff should be in the halls for class changes as well as at special events.
Another principal is to create climate of ownership and school pride. When schools and their students, parents, staff, community, etc. take part in the planning of a school they feel as though they have a vested interest in the school and what takes place. There begins to form a sense of pride and “ownership” that combats some of the bad elements. It also encourages the members of the school community to work with police and school administration to combat tough problems like gangs and graffiti.
7. Provide at least three essential ingredients of a safe school plan
There are many ingredients that go into a safe school plan. There are three that I will touch on and the first of them is placing school safety on the educational agenda. This is important because it involves a personal and collective commitment toward creating a safe school environment. The second is involving students and parents. This is crucial because no plan is effective without the participation of students and their parents. It is so crucial because when parents and students feel engaged in the planning and execution of a safety plan when they have a vested interest in their, or their child’s learning environment. Another ingredient that is essential is a legal review before planning. This is extremely important because all school safety plans must conform to federal, state and local laws, ordinances and regulations.
8. What is bullying? What is its impact on children in the school environment? Who is affected the most?
Bullying, in the context of school violence, occurs when one student, or group of students, intentionally singles out another student or group of students to intimidate or commit acts of violence against. These types of acts generally happen frequently. The school environment is affected mostly by the fact that students, typically the victims or those who recognize that they could be potential victims may choose to bring weapons to school to prevent or solve these types of situations. Middle school aged children generally tend to be the bully or victims more often than elementary and high school students.
